On August 19, 1943, just two days after the epic mission to Schweinfurt and Regensburg on which sixty B-17s were lost, the US Eighth Air Force selected airfields in Holland and Belgium as targets for its bomber force. Before take-off the participating crews thought it was going to be a "milk run".
